The Hong Kong idiom “一家人齊齊整整” (“a family together”) embodies ordinary people’s ultimate wish for life. With the impending 1997 handover, Hong Kong is in turmoil. An elderly couple moves to Australia with their young sons to join their daughter, only to find themselves feeling unwanted and burdened by tensions. Unbeknownst to them, their daughter is struggling too—separated from her husband in Hong Kong and unable to adapt to Australian life and culture. Meanwhile, their eldest daughter, who has married and moved to Germany, feels disconnected, torn between two cultures and missing her family. The eldest son remaining in Hong Kong resists leaving his hometown, yet feels compelled to emigrate as the deadline approaches.
