一對經歷過中國文化大革命洗禮的夫妻南生和李紅，為了追求更理想的生活，想盡辦法爭取妻子出國留學及工作，暫且擱下一家團聚的幸福。可惜彼邦的生活不如人意，李紅飽受壓力，但鄉間的南生不明所以，力勸她故國莫歸，寧願在外國自由求存。南生慢慢失去李紅的聯絡，冒險偷渡美國尋妻，巧遇未成年的「ABC」少女Jane，得她協助找上幾位曾跟李紅交集的人。妻子芳蹤杳杳，又面對文化和價值觀差異的衝擊，感到迷失的南生為了籌措路費不惜當上拉皮條。走過一回如人間地獄的洗禮，南生深深感受李紅在異鄉的艱難。最後二人重遇，竟換來更悲慘的結局。

Nansheng and Li Hong, a couple shaped by the Cultural Revolution, sacrifice family unity for a better life overseas. Li Hong faces immense pressure abroad, while Nansheng remains unaware, believing life abroad is preferable. When he loses contact with her, Nansheng illegally enters the U.S. to find his wife. Aided by Jane, an “ABC” teen, he tracks down Li Hong’s acquaintances but struggles with cultural differences and disillusionment. In desperation, he even becomes involved in prostitution to fund his search. Eventually reunited, they face an even harsher fate.
